Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (Bearberry)

Habitat On dry rocky hills over the northern regions of the northern hemisphere, often very extensive ground cover. 2
Constituents Glycosides (including: arbutin, methul-arbutin and ericolin) 2

Tannins 2

Actions (Mild) Diuretic 4

Astringent 4

Antiseptic 4

Demulcent 4

Selective and potent urinary antiseptic 2

Applications Urinary tract infections (esp. with acidic urine) 2

Urinary gravel 4

Ulceration in kidney or bladder 4

Cystitis 4

Enuresis 4

Vaginal ulceration and infection (topically) 4

Dosage Dried Leaves: 1 – 4 gms tds 2

Liquid Extract: 1:1 25% 1.5 – 2.5 mls tds 3

Tincture: 1:5 25% 2-4 ml tds 3

Combinations Agropyron repens & Achillea millefolium for Urinary infection 4
C/I Cautions Not to be used during pregnancy 5

Contraindicated in kidney disorders and with acidic urine or conjunction with remedies which produce acidic urine 5

Not for prolonged use without consultation with a practitioner 5

Treatment should be short duration (maximum of 7 days) 3

BHP S/I Acute catarrhal cystitis with dysuria and highly acidic urine 6
