Common Name Gravel Root, Trumpet-weed, Gravelweed, Joe-pye Weed, Jopi Weed, Queen-of-the-Meadow Root, Purple Boneset, Hempweed. 1

Anti-lithic 4

Tones the pelvic viscera in general 2

Increases excretion of solids and prevents precipitation of urates 9

Emmenagogue 9

Applications Kidney stones or gravel 4

Urinary infection (Cystitis, urethritis) [Hoffmnann]

Rheumatism and gout 4

Prostatic inflammation 2

Spasmodic dysmenorrhoea with scanty menstruation [Mill]

Atonic conditions with dysuris 9

Dosage MEDIUM dose herb

Dried Herb: 1-4 gm (root and rhizome) tds 2

Decoction: 1 tea spoon tds 4

Tincture: 1-2 mls tds 4

Combinations Petroselinum crispum, Parietaria diffusa, or Hydrangea arborescens for kidney stones or gravel. 4
C/I Cautions For external use only 5

Not to be used during pregnancy 5

Not to be used whilst nursing 5

Long-term use is not recommended 5

Contains toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids 5

Note: Effective July 1996 the American Herbal Products Association recommended the use of a cautionary label on products containing this herb "For external use only. Do not apply to broken or abraded skin. Do not use when nursing. 5
