Plantago major (Greater Plantain)

Botanic Name Plantago major L.
Common Name Greater plantain, Broad-leaved plantain, Plantain, Ripple Grass, Waybread, Slan-lus, Waybroad, Snakeweed, Cuckoo’s Bread, Englishman’s Foot, White Man’s Foot. 1
Family Plantaginaceae
Parts Used Leaves or aerial parts.
Habitat On roadsides and fields and waste places all over the world 2
Constituents Mucilage 2

Glycosides (including acubin) 2

Tannins 2

Zinc, Silica, Potassium2

Clorogenic acid, ursolic acid 4

Actions (Relaxing) Expectorant 4

Demulcent 4

Astringent 4

Diuretic 4

Applications Urinary tract infections and irritations 2

Dry and nervous cough 2

Bronchitis 4

Gastric inflammation 2

Haemorrhoids (topically) 2

Diarrhoea 4

Cystitis where there is bleeding 4

Dosage MEDIUM dose herb

Dried Leaf: 1 – 4 gm tds 2

Infusion: 2 tea spoons tds 4

Tincture: 2- 3 ml tds 4

Combinations Symphytum* in gastric haemorrhage and for haemorrhoids6
C/I Cautions Can be safely consumed when used appropriately 5
BHP S/I Haemorrhoids with bleeding and irritation6
